Baggage Conveyor Belts installed in Seoul Station

Visitors to Seoul will be happy to hear that KORAIL has recently installed automated conveyor belts in the train and subway (Lines 1-4) transit pathway within Seoul Station. This is known to be the first baggage conveyor belts installed for train transfer passengers. With the installation of these belts, visitors can now easily move their luggage at the stairway.

Numerous travelers transferring from KTX, Airport Railroad, and Seoul subway through Seoul Station had no other option but to step up or down from the stairway while hand carrying their heavy luggage. To save visitors from this trouble, a total of four conveyor belts were installed in September, two on each side of the stairway moving in opposite directions. The conveyor belts were designed to be user-friendly in hopes of offering convenience to travelers transferring through Seoul Station.

Opened in May 2016 in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Y.M.C. Seoul is the third store in the world following Y.M.C. UK and Y.M.C. London. The brand Y.M.C. was unveiled in 1995 with a uniquely new sportswear design combining workwear, soccer fan fashion, military look, and traditional costumes. Y.M.C. is short for “You Must Create,” and it pursues the brand philosophy of one creating his or her own style instead of following fashion. Products mainly consist of functional design items such as clothing, bags, and shoes for men and women. In keeping with the brand slogan, Y.M.C. is more about unique design products than trend-sensitive items. The store space spans two floors: the first floor with the main entrance and exit and a showroom, and the base room. The showroom on the first floor displays new products representing the Y.M.C. brand. This is where customers can find all products by Y.M.C. The basement, which is decorated with a small indoor garden as well as artworks on the wall, occasionally functions as a cultural space for special events for customers.

Popular Traditional Markets Outside of Seoul

Probably only at the Korean marketplace, you will find most older generations manning their stands, ajummas (middle-aged Korean women) hunting for bargains, and groups of young ladies giggling and having fun. A trip to one of the city's busy marketplaces is an ideal place to soak up the genuine spirit of Seoul as an industrialized country with a lot of heart.

Jeju Dongmun Traditional Market

Busan Gukje Market -> For that reason, the place makes up an interesting mixes of customers making an attractive filming spot for many K-movies, K-dramas, often featuring as a backdrop of popular TV shows as well like ‘1 Night 2 Days’. Items sold here includes industrial products such as machinery, electronics, kitchen appliances, as well as clothing, food, agricultural products, fish, and dairy goods. Food in particular, it is famous for bibim-dangmyeon (Spicy Glass Noodles), yubu-jeongol (fried tofu stew), and ssiat-hotteok (sweet Korean pancake stuffed with seeds).

Bupyeong (Kkangtong) -> Jagalchi Market, Yongdusan Park and Bosu-dong Book Street are also located nearby, giving plenty of opportunity for visitors to explore the neighborhood.

Chuncheon Romantic Market -> traditional market in Chuncheon that sells hanbok, bags, shoes, clothes, electronic appliances, jewerly, and food.

Jeonju Nambu Traditional Market

Gyeongju Jungang Market

Incheon Sinpo International Market

Suwon Paldalmun Market

Daegu Seomun Market -> The market is sectioned into 6 major districts, housing roughly four thousands vendors and stores in total. Popular Traditional Markets in Seoul

There's no better place to get a taste of real Korean life than the market. The biggest and most popular markets in Seoul are Namdaemun Market and Gwangjang Market, which not only sell Korean comfort foods, but also bustle with vendors of all kinds. When looking for place to either shop or eat, a visit to one of these Korean marketplaces is a must!

Marts & General Stores

Korean Supermarkets and Convenience Stores
Before visiting Korea, it can be helpful to know a bit about Korean supermarkets or convenience stores. You can not only purchase all your daily needs and basic products here, but can also purchase popular souvenir food items like Korean laver and snacks.
Top 3 Supermarkets in Korea

The three largest supermarket brands in Korea are Lotte Mart, E-mart and Home Plus, each offering an easy and convenient shopping experience. All of these large-scale retail businesses house a diverse range of general items and luxury goods, where customers can find almost everything they need. The number of these stores has exceeded 400, springing up in nearly every part of Korea.

Because of the large number of supermarkets, the stores have different operating schedules depending on their location. For example, most of the stores in Seoul are closed on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, whereas markets in other regions are often closed on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. However, as this is not a fixed rule and is subject to change, visitors are recommended to double check the stores’ closed days in advance to avoid any inconveniences.

Shopping at these supermarkets will save a significant amount of time and money, as discounts and many promotional events are happening almost every day. Most of these supermarkets offer a basic level of foreign language service, so it is not very difficult for first-time visitors to explore these places as well. Experience the local shopping culture while browsing for the freshest food ingredients, fashion items, electronic goods and gifts for your friends and family today!

“Hands-on experiences are better than a thousand lessons. This will leave a good impression and this will bring more interest in our food from not only our children, but from foreign tourists, too.”

So said President Park Geun-hye as she was making yakgwa, a traditional Korean confectionary made of flour and honey alongside actor Song Jong-ki on April 11 during the opening ceremony of the K-Style Hub. The hub is a venue where people can see, sample, purchase and even make traditional Korean foods, as well as browse exhibits about Korean tourism and pop culture.

Among those in attendance at the ceremony were Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Kim Jongdeok, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Lee Dong-phil, Song Joong-ki who was recently selected as an Honorary Ambassador for Korean tourism, and Director Yoon Sook-ja of the Institute of Traditional Korean Food.

President Park Geun-hye looks around exhibits on display at the newly-opened K-Style Hub on April 11.

As she admired images of Korean cuisine in an exhibit on the third floor of the Korean Food Exhibition Hall, President Park said, “You can have fun here, finding the characteristics of Korean cuisine and the excellence of choosing ingredients to make it. You get a better understanding of traditions in our foods, as well.”

The exhibition gives a glimpse into the seasonal ingredients and wisdom embedded in Korean cuisine.

At the Korean Food Hands-on Experience Hall on the fourth floor, President Park sampled some “kimchi chips,” a dried version of kimchi. As an official from the hall explained that they had developed the kimchi chips as an effort to make it easier for more people to enjoy kimchi on the table or at parties, President Park asked, “What kind of alcohol will go best with these chips?” She got an answer. “Moonbaesool,” a traditional spirit.

President Park Geun-hye (center) walks around the K-Style Hub as she talks with Director Yoon Sook-ja (left) of the Institute of Traditional Korean Food on April 11. From left: Director Yoon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Kim Jongdeok, President Park Geun-hye, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Lee Dong-phil and actor Song Joong-ki.

Director Yoon said, “There we have samgyetang, a food that Song Joong-ki made in ‘Descendants of the Sun,’" as she pointed at a bowl of samgyetang, or ginseng chicken soup, on exhibit here. Song, standing next to the president, said, “Since it was featured in the drama, samgyetang has grown in popularity across China. I heard that many Chinese people enjoy having their own version of samgyetang. I would say that Korean samgyetang is by far the best of all, though.”

The K-Style Hub allows visitors to have realistic experiences with Korean pop culture and to get familiar with medical tourism, as well as traditional Korean cuisine, thanks to both highly advanced technologies. There are also chances to try ski jumping in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do Province, and to virtually visit some of the country's top tourist spots, including Gyeongbokgung Palace, Myeongdong, Nami Island and Jeju Island.

Ppuri (Family Root) Park, located between Bomunsan Mt. and Banghwasan Mt. in Chimsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon-si, is a park created under the theme of filial piety, one of the overriding values of Korean society. Opened on November 1, 1997, the park occupies a plot of land measuring 109,091 m² and is filled with unique sculptures and art pieces that remind visitors of their family ties. The sculptures at the park hold a special meaning for Koreans, as each of the 136 sculptures represents each of the different last names of Korea. On the front of each sculpture is the history of the family (name) and on the back is a description of the sculpture itself and other relevant information.

Other main points of interest at Ppuri Park include the Deep-rooted Spring (symbolizing the 12 jisin/12 gods of the earth), waterfront stage, grass square, traffic safety education center, recreational forest, and natural observatory. Another must-visit attraction is the Samnam Memorial Tower, which represents the harmony and cooperation between the Honam (western region) and Yeongnam (eastern region) of Korea.

Yeouido Park is a large recreational area located on Yeouido Island in the central part of Seoul. It was once originally covered with black asphalt, and people frequented the place for bicycling and roller-skating. The construction began in 1997, and opened officially in February 1999. It is now the place where many people in the city come to rest and enjoy strolling around, play sports, and cultural events.

The park is divided into theme-based sections: the Traditional Korean Forest, Grass Square, Culture Square, and Nature’s Ecosystem Forest. In the Traditional Korean Forest, only traditional Korean trees are planted, and it has a pond and an octagonal pavilion, with a trail walk that completes the feel of an elegant Korean garden. Grass Square has a low hill, with grass field and various trails, and nearby there are evergreens and deciduous trees to reflect the changing of the seasons. Many performances and events are held at the Cultural Square, and because there are many zelkova trees lined up nearby, it is a great place to rest. One particular part of the park that is most enjoyed is the Nature’s Ecosystem Forest – it is where you can observe nature and learn from an ecologically sensitive pond and forest, right in the middle of the city. Composed of a swamp area, waterline area, grassland area, and a forest, you can observe various kinds of life forms living in these areas.

One of the must-see areas is the Yunjunro Street, behind the National Assembly Building. This place is famous for having the loveliest cherry blossom street in Seoul. Cherry blossom trees, 30 to 40 years old, line up for about 6km, and is very popular in the spring.
